2023 AFL : Magpies defeat Brisbane Lions by four points

Collingwood has edged the Brisbane Lions by just four points in a pulsating AFL grand final at the MCG, capturing its 16th premiership and first in 13 years.

Heading into the final quarter in front of more than 100,000 spectators, the Magpies held a four-point lead but after the exchange of behinds, Charlie Cameron sneaked through a goal for the Lions with just over five minutes on the clock.

Cameron’s goal gave the Lions a two-point advantage, but it proved to be short-lived, with Jordan De Goey immediately responding for the Magpies.

Steele Sidebottom added another major to extend the Magpies’ lead to 10 points, however Joe Daniher kept the Lions in the contest when he slotted a goal with just over 90 seconds on the clock.

Both sides were out on their feet and it was the Magpies who prevailed after the frantic final moments to win their first flag since 2010.

The Magpies had earlier shot out of the blocks by kicking the opening two goals of the match, with Nick Daicos and Bobby Hill on target for the minor premiers.
