50 cent coin can sell for 80 times its face value

If you’ve got one of these 50 cent coins in your pocket, you might not want to use it on your next café stop.

While seemingly completely regular in appearance, the coin can fetch as much as $40 amongst coin collectors – 80 times its face value.

The answer as to why lies on the back.

The reason, according to coin collector Michael McCauley, comes down to the year: 1985.

“They only made one million of these coins in 1985 and it gives it a recent selling price range of $15 to $40,” he told his followers in a recent TikTok Video .
