Maithripala completes compensation payments to Easter attack victims

Former President Maithripala Sirisena has completed the payments of compensation of Rs. 100 million to the victims of the Easter Sunday terror attacks as ordered by the Supreme Court.

Accordingly, it is reported that the former President has paid the remaining amount of Rs. 12 million on August 16, thereby completing the total compensation payment ordered by the court.

On January 12, 2023, the Supreme Court found that former President Sirisena, former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando, former IGP Pujith Jayasundara, former National Intelligence Chief Sisira Mendis and former Chief of State Intelligence Nilantha Jayawardena have violated the Fundamental Rights of petitioners, by failing to take action to prevent the Easter Sunday attacks despite receiving sufficient intelligence information.

The Supreme Court had ordered former President Maithripala Sirisena and several others including former IGP Pujith Jayasundera to pay compensation to the victims for failure to prevent the Easter Sunday bomb attacks.

The former President paid Rs. 58 million in compensation to the victims in July this year.
