Victorians urged to stay home as worst weather of year intensifies

Victorians are being warned to brace for one of the worst weather events of the year, equivalent to a category three cyclone.

Wild winds lashed the state on Sunday night, with the SES urging people to avoid travel and work from home on Monday.

More than 159,000 houses are currently experiencing power outages as Victoria continues to be lashed with wild and destructive weather.

In an update early today, the Bureau of Meteorology warned a strong cold front is sweeping over central Victoria to the east of Melbourne, bringing destructive winds, thunderstorms, heavy rain and abnormally high tides.

The Victorian government forecasts that at least 159,000 homes will be without power.

Powercor crews have been called out to more than 239 individual jobs and are working to restore electricity to 34,600 customers in western Victoria after strong winds damaged power infrastructure.
