Coles rolls out ‘reverse vending machines’ for bottles, cans in Victoria

Coles shoppers can put some coins in their pockets and help the planet after the supermarket chain chipped in to support the state’s new return-and-earn scheme.

The state government today launched its Container Deposit Scheme, which means Victorians can return any eligible can, bottle, or carton to a refund point for a 10-cent reward.

Eligible containers include plastic soft drink bottles, glass beer bottles, soft drinks and alcohol sold in cans, and small fruit juice cartons. A full list can be found here.

Coles has joined the effort by rolling out 47 “reverse vending machines” across its stores statewide.

That will bring its national total of reverse vending machines to 139, with none in Tasmania as the state is yet to introduce a container deposit scheme.

Last financial year, more than 200 million drink containers, cans, cartons and bottles were returned to Coles-linked sites, the supermarket said.

Since the retailer started supporting the various state-based schemes in 2018, it claimed more than a billion containers had been returned to Coles-linked sites.

“We’re confident by having (reverse vending machines) in such convenient locations we will be able to significantly reduce the state’s litter and give Victorians the option of putting cash back in their pockets,” Environment Minister Steve Dimopoulos said.
