Sharp rise in assaults on taxi drivers

New figures show assaults on taxi drivers have risen sharply.

According to the Herald Sun, more than 860 assaults were recorded in the eight months to August.

That shows more than an increase of 200 from the year prior.

13cabs says some drivers are being threatened with machetes, bashed in the face with bottles, and chased from their vehicles.

It’s prompted the company to launch a campaign to raise awareness about driver safety.

Some taxis will now have specially designed dome lights displaying the words ‘sister’, ‘son’ and ‘best friend’, instead of the company name.
