David Warner sends fans into a frenzy as he adds to speculation he could play through to 2027 Cricket World Cup

David Warner has fuelled rumours he is open to extending his international cricket career through to the 2027 World Cup.

There has been widespread speculation about the 37-year-old opener’s retirement from the international game with the Australian summer expected to be his last in the baggy green but Warner has left the door open to playing on in the shorter forms.

ESPNcricinfo shared a social media post celebrating Warner’s stunning World Cup record but the explosive batter responded leaving many fans hopeful the end is not on the horizon.

“David Warner’s ODI World Cup career ends with a glorious record,” the post read.

Warner responded: “Who said I’m finished??”

Immediately fans flooded the comments with messages supporting the idea of Warner extending his career.

“37 years young Warner has started his 2.0 version,” one replied.

“Keep going David, I love watching you play,” another added.

A third wrote: “Bro please rest you’ve won enough trophies please let us have 2027 at least.”

“Let’s go! Warner is still young. Bring it on Champions Trophy and World Cup!” commented one.

Warner’s comment came just hours after he signed off an Instagram post about the tournament with: “See you in 2027.”

Australia won its sixth Cricket World Cup defeating host nation India by six wickets in the final on Sunday night.

Warner was Australia’s top run scorer for the tournament which was his second ODI World Cup title after winning at home in 2015.

Ahead of the World Cup semi-final against South Africa Warner hinted that he had thought about playing past 40 like other stars of the game.

“Bradley Hogg played until he was past 40 (43 in the Big Bash). Chris Gayle, Shoaib Malik did the same thing,” he said.

“I’m still feeling fit. I’ll have to give myself a little bit of time off after this summer to actually think about all of that first. My goal is still to set my sights on playing the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean (next June) first.

“And I think from there, I’ll probably decide what I’m going to do with white-ball cricket.”

Should Warner commit to playing on in the green and gold he said he would not take up a Cricket Australia contract even if he plays enough games to trigger a contract.

“Obviously, you’ve got contracting systems and all that stuff are inside that. So, there’s a lot of things you’ve got to factor in as well. They’re probably going to be conversations I’ll have after this summer,” he said.

Previously Warner said he would hang up the baggy green after the SCG Test even if it means retiring halfway through the Australian summer with the Pakistan matches at Perth, Melbourne and Sydney before a series against the West Indies in Adelaide and Brisbane.
