Victorian Premier and Treasurer admit to past cannabis use

Victoria’s Premier Jacinta Allan and Treasurer Tim Pallas have both admitted they have used cannabis as the Labor government announced it was open to talks on decriminalising cannabis for personal and recreational use.

Ms Allan when asked if she had ever tried the drug before admitted “It was a long, long time ago. A long, long, long time ago”.

“I think it’s important that we inject a sense of honesty into our contributions on this, because this is a real issue for many in our community,” Ms Allan said.

Treasurer Tim Pallas has also revealed he has used cannabis and personally supports legalising the drug.

“Personal view, well, I suppose I should declare I have used and yeah, I don’t think a criminal approach to this is best. A health based approach would be best.”

It comes as the Legalise Cannabis Party on Wednesday brought a broader bill into the upper house of the Victorian parliament to legalise cannabis for personal and recreational use.

Speaking in parliament on Wednesday, Mental Health Minister Ingrid Stitt said the government couldn’t support the bill that has been put in its current form, but the government would be amenable to reform around legalising cannabis.
