NSW government cracks down on councils over housing

The New South Wales government is embarking on a significant overhaul of planning rules to fast-track more low-rise housing in Sydney.

While some areas will be exempt because of heritage restrictions, councils have been warned they shouldn’t use these as an excuse to block proposed new developments, especially those near transport hubs.

New South Wales Planning Minister Paul Scully said this is about delivering the density on land that is already zoned for that density.

“So for instance, land zone low density, so the R2 zone with well-located within 800 meters of walking distance of transport and town centres,” Mr Paul Scully told Sky News Australia.

“60 per cent of local environment plans didn’t allow residential flat building on medium density lands, it’s just something we need to address.”
