OECD testing reveals drastic decline in students’ maths and reading skills

The maths and reading skills of 15-year-olds has drastically declined in Australia over the past two decades according to a global test.

The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) results were published on Tuesday revealing the drop in academics.

The drop in maths and reading skills is being attributed to a range of factors from teacher shortages, to distractions from digital devices as well as the ongoing impact of school closures as a result of COVID.

While the Australian score in science has increased slightly it remains 20 per cent below the performance of students in 2006.

Twenty points is seen as equivalent to a year of learning.

The OECD has been conducting the test since 2000.
