Driver allegedly blows five times legal limit after speeding in Victoria

A South Australian man has been caught driving five times over the legal alcohol limit in the regional town of Horsham in Victoria on Christmas Day.

The 30-year-old first caught the attention of police for speeding westbound along the Western Highway in Drung on Monday at about 2:10pm.

Officers from the Horsham Highway Patrol intercepted the Honda Civic sedan shortly after and conducted a breath test.

The driver returned an alleged evidentiary breath test result of 0.228 blood alcohol concentration.

The legal limit for fully licenced drivers In Victoria and all other states remains 0.05.

The man’s licence was immediately suspended, and his car impounded for a fee of $1455.

It also understood the 30-year-old’s vehicle was unregistered.

He will be summonsed in relation to drink driving and speeding offences.

The impound forms parts of Operation Roadwise, an initiative run by Victoria Police targeting speeding, driver fatigue and impaired driving in Melbourne and regional Victoria.

The operation aims to reduce road trauma in the state.

The number of lives lost of Victoria roads has jumped by 23.5 per cent from last year.

More than 280 people have died in fatal road accidents this year.

While Victoria does not enforce the double demerit system, unlike its neighbouring state NSW, motorists are being asked to drive carefully during the holiday period.
