Australia Day citizenship ceremonies scrapped by 81 councils

More than 80 councils have cancelled traditional Australia Day citizenship ceremonies out of respect for Indigenous people.

It’s a jump from just four councils who shifted the date earlier this year and includes the City of Sydney Council.

The Morrison government had introduced a bill forcing councils to hold citizenship ceremonies on Australia Day but Anthony Albanese later abolished it.

Citizenship Minister Andrew Giles says the government has no plans to change the date.

Despite that, Shadow Immigration Minister Dan Tehan is accusing the Prime Minister of undermining the national day.

He also told Sky News the Coalition will reimpose the mandate for councils if it wins the next election.
