Religious discrimination bill faces heat over its effectiveness

There are concerns the government’s new religious discrimination bill will fail unless there are frameworks to allow for freedom of speech and protection against vilification.

Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus has told faith leaders a draft bill will be ready by July.

However, along with the Coalition, they are seeking more information as to how the legislation would shield constituents from hate speech before supporting the measure.

The Opposition says they are sceptical the laws would pass Parliament before the next election.

Nationals Senator Matt Canavan believes the religious discrimination bill represents another election promise being broken by the Albanese government.
