Storms, flash flooding likely across Victoria from Sunday night

Emergency services are warning of potential flash flooding across Victoria, with significant rain predicted to fall across the state from Sunday night and into Monday.

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting rainfall across Victoria, but warns the heaviest falls are expected in the state’s north-central and north-eastern areas, where 150 millimetres is predicted.

Victorian emergency management commissioner Rick Nugent said rain of up to 200mm was possible, and authorities were preparing for totals at the upper end of that range.

“We ask that you also plan for the higher levels wherever you are across the state, particularly if you’re in flood-prone areas,” Mr Nugent said.

The warning comes just days after Victoria’s High Country was hit by wild weather.

The extreme weather is expected to begin in the state’s north-west and south-west on Sunday, before moving across central and north-central areas and into the east on Monday.

Emergency Management Victoria has issued Flood Watch warnings for widespread minor, and isolated moderate floods, covering most rivers systems across northern and central parts of Victoria.

The warnings also cover parts of Melbourne, including the Yarra River downstream of Coldstream.

Mr Nugent said recent rain meant many catchments areas, rivers and creeks were full.

“So it’s highly likely that there will be flash floods in flood areas,” he said.

“If you’re living in a flood-prone area, please make the necessary plans.

He said people staying in caravan parks or camping along waterways were at the highest risk from flash flooding or falling branches, and warned people not to drive through floodwater.
