Government vetoes Victoria’s offshore wind strategy over wetland risk

The federal government has vetoed Victoria’s offshore wind strategy, saying it poses an unacceptable risk to local wetlands.

The Victorian government had planned a program of locally-produced wind turbines in the Port of Hastings for use in offshore wind farms.

But Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek says the production facility’s planned 600-metre wharf southeast of Melbourne would cause irreversible damage to the wetland, and its native flora and fauna.

The plan’s cancellation has raised concerns about a lack of alternative sites, potentially slowing Victoria’s transition to renewable energy.

Victoria’s green energy plans were key to the Albanese government reaching its target of 82 per cent renewables by 2030.
