‘Hurting Australians’: Calls for Albanese to resolve ‘industrial dispute’

Former Australian Ambassador to Israel Dave Sharma says the Albanese government “should be addressing” an industrial dispute involving Australia’s second largest port operator DP World Australia.

Mr Sharma’s comments come after DP World Australia said ongoing industrial action had stalled about 44,000 containers and the backlog could take up to eight weeks to clear.

The operator wants the Albanese government to intervene.

“The government should be addressing this head-on,” Mr Sharma told Sky News Australia.

“It’s hurting Australian exporters but it’s also hurting Australian consumers.

“If Anthony Albanese is serious about wanting to address the cost of living crisis – he should be calling in the Fair Work Commission and … instructing them to get the Maritime Union of Australia and DP World to sit down and resolve this industrial dispute.”
