The Albanese government will reveal its plans to address budget blowouts from the National Disability Insurance Scheme’s soaring participants and payments this week.
There are doubts over whether a deal can be struck with state governments as they will inevitably have to pick up the pieces if NDIS users are cut out of the system.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will host a national cabinet meeting with state and territory leaders with the $42 billion-a-year NDIS to be high on the agenda.
Attempts by the federal government to overhaul the scheme have been thwarted by state and territory governments as they are refusing to negotiate unless a lucrative $5 billion-a-year deal to top-up state coffers with GST payments is made permanent.
“The NDIS was never meant to be all things to all people with a disability in Australia,” NDIS Minister Bill Shorten said.
“It was aimed at helping people most profoundly or severely impacted by their disability so they could have a fulfilling life.”
