Australia Post store caught selling fake designer jewellery

An Australia Post office in Sydney’s west has caught the attention of curious shoppers for apparently selling fake designer jewellery.

The manager told A Current Affair she bought the goods in Vietnam and didn’t think it would be a problem, but the luxury brands whose logos have been copied might not feel the same.

“I go holiday overseas and we just bought it there and I thought I’d put it on for sale,” Wentworthville LPO manager Jennie said.

Jennie revealed she buys the fake jewellery in Vietnam and brings it back to Australia.

“How much does that cost in Vietnam?” A Current Affair asked.

“I buy (a) whole bundle. I think it’s like eight dollars, eight or 10 dollars,” she said.

Jennie said the post office isn’t passing off the products as real designer goods and making a big profit, so didn’t think there’d be an issue.

“Not real but we think it’s fashion jewellery. That’s all,” Jennie said.

“I just put it there for sale because I sell all (at a) reasonable price, $29.95 for all, everything.”

“Because if someone sells fakes they can get a very big amount, $300, $400 something like that, but I think because it’s fashion jewellery I put in here first.”

“Can’t you see it says Chanel, and Gucci?” A Current Affair asked.

“I can remove now, it’s all good, it’s all good,” Jennie responded.

She may work for the snail mail, but Jennie’s pace was more like a cheetah, as she cleared the shelves of all traces of the so-called “fashion jewellery”.

“I remove now, ok, so thank you. I can remove now,” she said.

It’s illegal to make, sell or distribute counterfeit goods in Australia and if found guilty, penalties can include a fine or jail time.

While this postal worker isn’t facing any criminal charges, locals in Wentworthville think Australia Post, which is owned by the government, should do better.

“There’s no point of even debating that – it should not be done,” local man Pavan said.

“One thing, like, is obviously it’s indirectly supporting modern slavery that’s a big thing and second thing is by doing such thing you lose trust.”
