Australian cheese icon to disappear from supermarket shelves

Cheese lovers will soon no longer be able to buy King Island Dairy products after its parent company revealed it was moving to shut down the iconic brand.

Saputo Dairy Australia on Thursday said it was intending to retire the King Island Dairy brand in the middle of next year following a “strategic review” into its operations.

SDA said the review had determined the almost 100-year-old dairy facility on King Island, in the Bass Strait, had to shut.

The company said closing the facility was deemed to be “the most viable way to strengthen SDA’s competitiveness based on changing industry and market conditions”.

“As King Island Dairy’s historic roots are deeply embedded in the region, it was hoped the strategic review would identify a potential buyer for the facility,” Leanne Cutts, President and Chief Operating Officer (International and Europe), Saputo Inc, said.

“It is a unique brand, with a plant that is nearly 100 years old and designed to produce hand-made specialty cheeses.
