The attention of Australian medical experts has been focused on the revelation of a global study that the IUD birth control method increases the risk of breast cancer.
Australian experts inform women that women who use the IUD contraceptive method as a treatment for endometriosis have no such cancer risk.
A Danish research group that studied 156,000 women between the ages of 15 and 49 found that the use of IUDs increases the risk of breast cancer, and it attracted international attention.
The women surveyed showed an increased risk of breast cancer based on the length of time they had used the IUD.
One in seven people with endometriosis uses an IUD and reports of related studies have raised concerns among Australian women.
However, gynecologist Dr Kate Tyson said women who usually use IUDs for endometriosis should not worry.
Dr. Kate Tyson pointed out that the findings of the Danish research group showed only a very small increase in the risk of breast cancer, and it was only one study.
Australians are also advised to be aware of misinformation and false information about endometriosis on the internet and in the media.
