Bangladesh prime minister resigns after deadly protests

Sheikh Hasina has flown to India on a military helicopter amid widespread protests which have seen the deaths of almost 300 people over the past month.

Ms Hasina departed from the capital Dhaka at 2.30pm on Monday on a military helicopter, reported local newspaper Prothon Alo, which said the prime minister and her sister were heading to a “safer place”.

At least 95 people, including at least 14 police officers, died in clashes in the capital on Sunday, according to local news, while hundreds more were injured.

Some reports indicated she was headed to neighbouring India, while others suggested she was travelling to Finland.
