Sri Lanka suffered their second, and potentially tournament-ending loss in the T20 World Cup as Bangladesh beat them by 2 wickets in Dallas on Friday night.
Having been put into bat, Sri Lanka got off to a flyer in the power play, scoring 53/2. However, they lost momentum dramatically, managing only 71 runs and lost 7 wickets in the next 14 overs.
Defending a below-par 124, Sri Lankan bowlers started well, restricting Bangladesh to 6 for 2 in the 2nd over. The third wicket fell with only 28 on the board as skipper Shanto was dismissed by Thushara, his second wicket.
The momentum shifted dramatically in Bangladesh’s favor when Towhid Hridoy smashed skipper Hasaranga for three consecutive sixes before getting out on the next delivery.
However, with Sri Lanka picking up regular wickets in the latter stages, led by Nuwan Thushara’s 4 wickets for 18, the game got interesting again with Bangladesh needing 11 off last 2 overs with 2 wickets in hand, until Mahmadullah dispatched the 1st ball from Dasun Shanaka, a friendly full-toss for a six.
With two matches remaining in the group stages, Sri Lanka must win both and hope for other favorable results to have a chance at qualifying for the knockout stages. (NewsWire)
