Blackout warning as major heatwave to impact millions this week

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned of hot weather conditions in parts of New South Wales and Queensland over the next few days.

A heatwave is forecast to hit Sydney and parts of Queensland for days, with temperatures expected to reach 30 degrees Celsius.

Officials have warned that electricity demand will also increase in both states today and tomorrow, with millions of people expected to use air conditioning.

The Australian Energy Market Operator said it has warned energy companies and is working with power plant operators and transmission companies to improve power availability.

Temperatures in Sydney’s west are set to reach 38 degrees today, with temperatures expected to rise to 39 degrees tomorrow.

The Bureau of Meteorology has also forecast a high chance of light rain in Sydney by the end of the week.

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned that the intense heatwave could be particularly dangerous for the elderly, infants, children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, people with underlying health conditions and those who are unwell.

The public is being advised to take precautions to protect themselves from the hot weather.
