A new Australian study has found, Australians who swear by wearing a smartwatch could be vulnerable to hackers
At Charles Darwin University Researcher were able to hack into a variety of wearable devices, valued between $25 and $150, while probing for security weaknesses in smartwatches.
The devices tested often used Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology, which sacrificed security for low energy consumption,
Smartwatches using the technology were found to have “very weak or no security defence system”, the research showed.
Researchers were able to use bluetooth “sniffing tools” – which are favoured by hackers to capture, decode, and analyse packets of data sent over a network to spy on people and steal their data – to gain access to some smartwatches.
