Child killed and five taken to hospital in head-on crash on Victoria’s Hamilton Hwy

A child has died and five others, including a young girl, have been rushed to hospital following a head-on collision in Victoria.

The two vehicles collided on the Hamilton Hwy at Stonehaven, west of Geelong, about 9pm on Wednesday.

Police say a child was declared dead at the scene.

A second child in the same car sustained life-threatening upper body injuries and was taken to Geelong Hospital in a stable condition.

A man and woman with serious injuries were also taken to Geelong Hospital.

One of two men in the other car also sustained life-threatening upper body injuries, while the other was also taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Ambulance Victoria said the four injured adults were aged in their 20s and 30s.

The girl has since been transferred to The Royal Children’s Hospital where she remains in a serious but stable condition.

One of the men has been transferred to The Alfred, where his condition is unknown.

The other adults remain in stable conditions at Geelong Hospital.

The highway was closed in both directions between Friend In Hand Rd and Pollocksford Rd, but has since been reopened.

“We ask motorists to plan ahead and to allow extra time for detours when travelling between Geelong and Inverleigh this morning,” the Department of Transport and Planning said earlier.

Victoria Police said an investigation is ongoing.
