Coles issues refund and apology to thousands of shoppers over pricing errors

Coles supermarket has issued an apology and refund to thousands of customers over a series of pricing errors.

The retail giant admits that it accidentally raised the price on 20 popular items during recent promotion offers in-store and online.

Coles has now sent emails to Flybuys members and online customers who have been affected by the errors, and shoppers are being asked to check their inboxes for any correspondence.

The supermarket is also urging customers who may have purchased items at the incorrect price in-store to visit the service desk at their local store for a refund.

“We incorrectly increased the ticket price of 20 products before the end of the promotional period,” the spokesperson said.

“We know cost of living is the biggest focus for so many of our customers. We sincerely apologise to our customers for this mistake and we are working quickly to make it right.

“As a result of this error, we are refunding the full cost of the items to customers. Coles has processed refunds for customers who used their Flybuys card or purchased through Coles Online.

“We ask any customer who purchased these items in store to visit our service desk with receipt for a full refund.

“We are also making arrangements to place these products back on promotion. Eight are currently back at a reduced price and we are making arrangements to place the remaining 12 on promotion for our customers.”

In the email to affected Flybuys customers, Coles said any refunds would be issued to their accounts.

“When you next scan your Flybuys card, the credit will deduct from your shop,” it said.

Customers have already taken to social media to voice their confusion over the email, with many saying they hadn’t realised they’d been overcharged.

“I have predominantly shopped at Woolworths the last couple of years so apologies if this is common. Now to go to Coles and see if I am getting back $1 or $20,” said one.

Another said: “I got it too. Didn’t buy the meats. Have no idea what it was that I was overcharged for.”

One more added: “I got that too, first time. And I shop at Coles fairly often.”

Many were so surprised by the email, that they even thought it might be a scam.

“I was very confused at first and was assuming some dubious link I need to click and put in all my card details or something but I think it’s legit,” a Reddit user said.
