Cost-of-living crisis has caused a noticeable slowdown on domestic travel

Australians are spending more on essentials because of the cost-of-living crisis, but they are still managing to set aside money for travel and entertainment.

Tourism Research Australia has found a noticeable slowdown in people travelling domestically in its latest forecast.

Australian Travel Industry Association Chief Executive Dean Long told Sky News Australia the slowdown of domestic travel will have an impact on regional tourism operators.

“What we’re seeing now though is that return to those pre-pandemic consumer patterns, which is a lot of international travel, people looking to connect with families, looking to experience those great international destinations that we’ve visited for many years,” he said.

“It’s not surprising that it’s come off, but it will have an impact on a lot of regional domestic tourism operators that have experienced a higher level of demand than what they historically have had.”
