COVID outbreak among Aussie Olympians

Anna Meares provides update on COVID outbreak; ‘Unreal’ difference for Sevens squad as family attend jersey presentation

Australian boxer Harry Garside has opened up on the “uncomfortable” nature of competing at his second Olympic Games.

The 27-year-old had a brief run in the pros after capturing bronze in Tokyo, before turning his attention back towards the amateur ranks in preparation for Paris.

“It’s quite a simple one … I’m filled with heaps of excitement but also heaps of nervousness,” Garside said.

“To get a bronze medal, the first medal in over 33 years and to come back and try win that gold medal, that’s pretty uncomfortable.

“I could have put my hat on that bronze medal … but I’ll always be the man in the arena and I’ll always put myself in the firing line.

“I feel like this will be the most successful team ever and I hope that I’m one of them.”

Garside won gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and is looking to bring that level of success to the Olympics this time around.

Australia’s chef de mission Anna Meares has provided an update on the COVID outbreak in camp, which has impacted the water polo squad.

“It is confined to the water polo team,” she said.

“There have been five athletes in total who have tested positive. There is training this afternoon and if those athletes are well enough to train, they will.

“They are following all the protocols that we have … little things for example like wearing masks and isolating from other team members when they’re not training.”

Aussie star Nicholas Malouf is heading into his third Olympics – but this one is all the more special with his young son Lenny joining him in camp.

The men’s Rugby Sevens captain was part of the squad in Tokyo, which fell in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and meant his family were unable to attend.

Fast-forward to Wednesday night and his wife, father and son will all be in attendance as they kick off their campaign against Samoa.

“It was a bit weird playing in an empty stadium and not having the people that I loved the most be there and able to watch,” Malouf said.

“To have them here now is super special for me – I’ve got my little boy here with us and I’m just really excited to share the moment with them.

“It’s great that we’ve got a huge contingency of family and friends here supporting them – it’s certainly not just me. They are the ones who have invested so much time in us.

“To be able to share it with them is unreal.”
