A Senate inquiry into the cancelled 2026 Commonwealth Games has urged any state and territory hosts of major events seeking federal funding to notify the federal government with contingency plans.
The report also encouraged any potential cancellations to be flagged well in advance.
Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews dismissed the interim report into the Commonwealth Games as a
“political stunt” even before it was released.
This approach prompted the senate chair to accuse him of putting regional communities in the trash can.
Approval has been granted for an upper-house Senate inquiry into the 2026 cancellation with the first date expected to be early October.
