Former Minister Harin Fernando Badulla, who was arrested for violating election laws, has been released on bail from the Magistrate’s Court.
Former Member of Parliament Harin Fernando, who contested for Badulla district from the New Democratic Front, was arrested this morning on charges of violating election laws.
The Badulla headquarters police said he was arrested when he came to give a statement on an allegation of violation of election laws ahead of the general election.
The arrested Harin Fernando was released on bail when he was presented to the Badulla Magistrate’s Court by the police.
For this year’s parliamentary elections, former member of parliament Harin Fernando contested for Badulla district from the New Democratic Front.
The silent period of the general election was supposed to start at midnight on the 11th and on that afternoon Harin Fernando was accused of engaging in election campaign activities in violation of the election laws.
There the officials of Badulla Police and Badulla District Election Dispute Resolution Center came to the place and at that time former Sports Minister Harin Fernando as well as his party members engaged in a heated exchange of words with the officials.
The police declared that the clothes worn by the former Sports Minister Harin Fernando and his party members were a violation of the election rules.
The police pointed out that the participation of more than five people in campaign activities is also a violation of election laws.
Accordingly, the police dispersed the group and former Sports Minister Harin Fernando took off the clothes he was wearing at the time and left the place.
