The government’s plan to restrict gambling advertising has reportedly been delayed until 2025 due to opposition from the sports industry.
Communications Minister Michel Rolland’s proposed reform of the law to ban or restrict gambling advertising has been delayed until 2025, media reports have reported.
The delay is said to have been caused by Minister Michel Rolland abandoning her bill after failing to secure support from the Senate.
Industry Minister Murray Watt said there would not be enough time in parliament this week to pass the law.
The proposed reforms would ban gambling advertising, limit gambling advertising during sporting events and limit the number of gambling ads that can be shown on television to two per hour.
This step is aimed at addressing concerns about the impact of gambling advertisements during sports matches and the impact of such advertisements on children.
