How new technology is predicting air turbulence

Sydney Airport could make New technology a big difference to travellers when they fly.

For the first time in Australia a new system is able to predict turbulence, as experts warn the climate crisis is making the phenomenon more common when planes take to the skies.

Airline pilots use various high-tech tools and reports to predict and minimize the effects of turbulence.

Pilots have access to weather radars, air traffic control reports and other pilots’ experiences to identify different types of turbulence.

Pre-flight planning with dispatchers and meteorologists, along with onboard equipment, helps pilots choose the smoothest routes and make adjustments mid-flight to avoid turbulence or warn passengers in advance.

Virgin Australia training captain Stu Ryan said the system “adds another level of safety”.

“More precisely at the take off and landing phase,” Ryan said.

“It’ll not only improve safety but it’ll improve the flow of traffic in Sydney, ultimately leads to better experience for our guests,” Ryan said
