How to find your colour analysis: The 60-second trick

Have you ever tried on a dress and thought it looked unflattering on you? Well, it could be the colour.

Fashion blogger Aly Kima has shared her simple trick to help you find what suits you best — in just 60 seconds.

Everyone has a different colour palette, ranging from cool to warm, based on their natural undertones.

Knowing your personal palette will allow you to find colours that complement you — whether it’s clothes, makeup, hair or jewellery.

Aly starts the video by explaining how she “can save you $300 to do your own colour analysis in 60 seconds”.

A professional colour analysis session in Australia costs between $200 and $385 for one-and-a-half hours.

“Knowing what colours look best on you is so powerful,” the American blogger said.

“I know this looks really intimidating but I’m going to break it down into three simple steps because everyone on the internet is overcomplicating things.”

Step one is figuring out if you look best in cool or warm colours, she said.

“If you look best in silver, you’re cool and you’re limited to winter or summer,” Aly said.

“If you look best in gold, you’re warm which means you’re spring or autumn.”

Aly says step two “is the hardest part but you’ve got this”.

“We are figuring out if you are bright or muted,” she said.

She suggests trying on a bright colour of lipstick and then a muted version of those same shades.

“If those bright colours overwhelm you, you’re muted — if you are soft and muted, you are summer or autumn.”

Whereas “if you are bright, you’re either spring or winter”, she said.

The blogger says once “you have your season, the last step will tell you which category you are”.

The last step is all about contrast — for example, between hair, skin and eyes.

“I have dark hair, dark eyes and very pale skin, which makes me a dark autumn,” Aly said.

However, she said “you are soft if you have low contrast features”.

“For example, dark skin, dark hair and brown eyes would be soft autumn,” she said.

Finally, “if your contrast is kind of in between, then you’re true autumn”.

Aly suggests using “no makeup and natural lighting for the best results”.

She says her video contains generalisations, “and there are subtleties to this”, so she says a professional will give the best results.

Her video has had almost two million views — with one praising her simple suggestions.

“This is probably the best explanation I’ve seen — everything else made it so confusing, thank you,” said one.

Another said: “Yay, finally someone explained it better — I think I’m a true autumn.”

A third added: “This was SO helpful, thank you.”
