Inflation has ‘come off substantially’ but is still ‘notoriously volatile’

Treasurer Jim Chalmers says inflation has “come off substantially” but can also be “notoriously volatile”.

He said the Albanese government’s “primary focus” is inflation as it is still a challenge.

“Later this week, we will get the monthly inflation numbers for November,” Mr Chalmers said during a media conference on Monday.

“A reminder that these monthly reads can be volatile, that’s why we don’t get carried away in either direction.

“What we already know is that inflation has come off substantially since its quarterly peak before the 2022 election and since its annual peak around this time last year.

“We have been making some welcome and encouraging progress overall, but that progress isn’t always in a straight line.”
