Italy is planning a new €25-a-night tourist tax

Italy is mulling a €25-a-night tax for tourists staying at its most expensive hotels to turn overtourism into economic gain

Overtourism is, quite frankly, everywhere right now. This year alone, tonnes of go-to travel destinations have been upping their entry fees – in fact there have been so many that we compiled a comprehensive roundup of how much it’ll cost you to enter destinations all over the world.

But the headline act has got a be Venice’s trial of the Euro 5 per day – tripper entry fee that caused a raucous when it was temporarily implemented earlier this year. However, the fee could be here to stay permanently but that’s not the only place in Italy  where it’s about to get more expensive to visit.

With almost 60 million international visitors in 2023, some of Italy’s holiday hotspots are plagued with congestion from cruise day trippers and overnight visitors during peak season.

The new fee would be paid on top of existing tourist taxes in Italy’s major cities, including Florence and Rome, in the ongoing battle against over tourism.

If the plans are approved, different tiers will assign the tax to room categories based on the rates charged by hotels.
