For the second year in a row, the life expectancy of Australians has shown a slight decline.
Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data revealed that between 2021 and 2023, a boy born in Australia is expected to live to 81.1 years and a girl to 85.1 years on average.
Despite a slight decline in life expectancy, Australians still have a higher life expectancy than many countries, including New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada, said Bureau of Statistics chief Beidar Cho.
Between 2021 and 2023, the highest number of Covid-19 deaths has been reported and is 15,982.
During this period, life expectancy for men dropped by 0.1 years and for women by 0.2 years.
New data has revealed that now a 60-year-old Australian man can expect to live an average of 24.2 more years and a woman an average of 27.1 more years.
Another fact that this survey has revealed is that a person’s home, state or region can also influence their average life expectancy.
The life expectancy of a male in the capital city of Canberra is 81.7 years, 81.6 years in Western Australia and 81.5 years in the state of Victoria.
The capital city of Canberra and Western Australia had the highest female life expectancy at 85.7 years, followed by 85.4 years in Victoria and 85.2 years in New South Wales.
