Light plane crashes with 17 on board near Geelong

Five people have been taken to hospital after a small plane “got into difficulty” and appeared to overshoot a runway before crashing in Victoria.

Emergency services were called to an airport in Barwon Heads, near Geelong, on Friday about 7:50am when calls came through a plane had crashed during take-off.

It is understood 17 people, including the pilot, were on board at the time of the incident.

Police confirmed five patients have been taken to hospital for further treatment. The extent of their injuries is not known at this stage.

The remaining 11 passengers were assessed at the scene.

Aerial footage showed the small blue plane, which had Skydive Australia emblazoned on the side of the aircraft, with damage to its nose.

At least two dozen emergency personnel, including firefighters and police, could be seen about 10 metres from where the plane crashed helping victims and assessing the area.
