Magnitude 5.0 earthquake recorded in Colac and Apollo Bay, Victoria

Victoria’s southwest has been rocked by a magnitude 5.0 earthquake overnight.

The earthquake occurred at Colac at 2.11am on October 22, according to VIC SES.

An aftershock with a magnitude of 3.5 was then recorded 70km away in Apollo Bay at 5.44am.

Over 5000 felt reports have been recorded to Geoscience Australia.

According to the government agency’s felt map, the quake was felt by residents far and wide.

Reports were submitted from those in Melbourne, up near the NSW-Victoria border and even in Tasmania.

In Apollo Bay, residents on social media said they had never felt anything like it before.

“My whole house shook,” one woman said.

Another wrote: “Everything in my house fell over, that was a big one.”

VIC SES has received several calls for assistance however only minor damage has been reported so far.

There have been no reported injuries.
