A man was fatally shot outside a Halloween party in North Melbourne, as police hunt for his killer.
Emergency services were called to Langford Street about 3.15am yesterday, where a man was on the pavement with a gunshot wound.
The man, who has not been formally identified, died at the scene.
While outnumbered officers barricaded the crime scene, young men traded kicks and punches on the footpath of the nearby Macaulay Road.
Relatives sprinted past police tape as emotions spilled over and police were forced to put a 17-year-old girl in handcuffs.
She will be charged on summons with assaulting an officer.
Police were unable to say whether the gunman, or the victim, attended the venue before the shooting earlier this morning.
Detective acting inspector Alan Rumble added he was also unable to say how many times the victim was shot or why.
“It’s a horrific incident,” he said.
“Our real goal here today is to follow down, identify all avenues of inquiry, investigate those and ensure that the victims, the family of the victim are supported at this horrible time.”
The largely industrial area of North Melbourne is swarming with CCTV.
No-one has been arrested or charged over the incident. Police do not believe there is an imminent threat to anyone else.
“We’ve got a lot of resources allocated, a lot of specialist resources allocated including local police,” Rumble said.
“There is nothing to suggest there is an ongoing immediate risk to the community or to others involved.”
