Matildas slip down FIFA world rankings list despite best ever World Cup performance

Despite finishing in fourth place at the Women’s World Cup, the Matildas have slipped down a spot in the latest FIFA world rankings list, released on Friday.

Winners Spain rose to No.2 in the FIFA, with the United States falling off the top spot for the first time in more than six years.

Sweden, which lost to Spain in the semifinals, and then beat the Matildas in the third-place playoff tops the rankings.

FIFA said Spain, which jumped four spots, would have led but for ranking points lost in a group-stage 4-0 defeat by Japan.
