Millions of Aussies to shiver through ‘coldest nights of the year’ 

Millions of Australians are expected to shiver through the night this week, with widespread frosty conditions forecast to set in across south-eastern parts of the country.

Sky News Meteorologist Rob Sharpe on Monday said South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania and Alice Springs have “a pretty good chance” of experiencing their “coldest nights of the year” this week, with Melbourne set to reach the milestone on Wednesday.Queensland and NSW are meanwhile set for a soaking start to the week.

More than 50mm of rain is on the way along parts of the country’s east coast from Rockhampton to Sydney.

Sharpe said it comes as a band of cloud runs from the Northern Territory, with a line of wet weather filtering into southern Queensland primarily this afternoon and this evening.

“At the same time along the NSW coastline showers are going to be redeveloping there as well this afternoon and this evening,” he said.

Wet weather along the east coast will continue throughout the week with a chance of “daily showers” in Sydney and Brisbane.

It comes after Sydneysiders on Monday morning rugged up to a chilly 6.4C.

“This morning in Sydney, a chilly start – but it’s going to be wet and cold as we move through much of the week,” Mr Sharpe said.  

Colder, drier air will spread across much of Australia this week, with both max. & min. temps forecast to be well below average

“The next two mornings look even colder across many parts of the south of the country with frost becoming even more widespread.”

Sydney will record a low of 10C on Tuesday to 11C on Wednesday and Thursday before reaching 12C on Friday.

Hobart on Monday experienced its coldest morning of this year with a chilly 2.5C.

The temperature in Melbourne was 6.8C while Queenslanders woke to warmer 18C.

The temperature on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday in Melbourne will hit lows of 4C, 2  and 3C respectively amid light winds.

Brisbanites will meanwhile face 13C on Tuesday and Wednesday before the state temperature falls back to 12C on Thursday and Friday.
