Almost half of Australians have less than a grand in savings, new research from Findershows.
The comparison website’s Consumer Sentiment Tracker found that 45 per cent of respondents – equivalent to 9.4 million people – had less than $1000 to fall back on.
On average, this group had just $210 apiece saved up. That’s just over what Finder found Australian households spent on average at the grocery store per week in 2023.
And 20 per cent – equivalent to 4.2 million – said they had nothing.
Unsurprisingly, 76 per cent of respondents said they were stressed by their current financial situation – but the survey also found a staggering difference between the haves and have-nots.
Finder said that according to their research, the national average for savings was $36,095, thanks to “super savers” propping up the numbers.
And once the 45 per cent with less than $1000 are left behind, the remaining 55 per cent average $65,078 – about two-thirds of the average Australian full-time salary of $98,217.
