Mobile phone detection cameras have been rolled out across Adelaide in a bid to combat distracted drivers.
The cameras have been installed at five high-risk locations and will begin recording offences from Wednesday.
There will be a three-month grace period for drivers nabbed, before penalties of $640 fines and the loss of three demerit points commence on September 19.
”We know that the use of mobile phones contributes significantly to distraction,” Charles Mountain from RAA said.
“It’s a significant fine, it’s a fine no one wants to pay and doesn’t need to if you’re doing the correct thing.”
The RAA says drivers are four times more likely to be involved in a crash while using a mobile phone.
The cameras have been strategically positioned at South Road in Torrensville, the Southern Expressway in Darlington, the North-South Motorway in Regency Park, Port Wakefield Road in Gepps Cross, and Port Road in Hindmarsh.
