Australia’s threatened species list keeps growing, Another 13 animals and plants have been added to Australia’s list of threatened species.
Environment society calls for the federal government to quickly overhaul the country’s nature laws.
The new fauna listings are three freshwater fish, three lizards, one frog and one turtle.
The flora listings are one rainforest tree, two flowering shrubs, a daisy and an orchid species.
“Australia has the most reptile species on the planet and more than 90% of them are not found anywhere else, said Australian Conservation Foundation nature campaigner Darcie Carruthers.
The Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) said It increases the number of species recognised as threatened with extinction in Australia to 2,224.
The environment minister, Tanya Plibersek, said the government was determined to better protect “our precious plants and animals”.
