More Australian workers heading back to office, with many choosing Friday

Whether it’s the opportunity to catch up with colleagues or escaping the routine of working from home, more Australians are returning to the office, according to a new study.

And in a surprise finding, Friday is one of the preferred days for workers to commute and join colleagues in an office setting.

These are some of the results from the University of Sydney’s Transport Opinion Survey, which surveyed 1029 people for their views about transport.

On average, Australian workers spent only 21 per cent, or between one and two days, of their work week at home during a two-week survey period in September.

This was a 6 per cent drop from research results in March.

The latter part of the working week is becoming less popular for working from home, the research found.

Fifty-two per cent stayed away from the office on Thursdays and 55 per cent on Fridays.

David Hensher, director of the university’s Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies, said professionals and sales people were driving the return to the office.

Social reasons were behind the trend of the return to offices on Fridays, he said.
