State health officials have issued a warning regarding the increase in the number of mpox infected patients reported from the state of Victoria.
Since last April, about 330 cases have been reported, of which 27 required hospitalization.
The Department of Health has warned that the number of infected people this year will be more than the number of cases reported in 2022.
The department said while mpox has mostly impacted gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men, anyone could be affected.
There have now been several cases in women across the state and heterosexual transmission has been reported.
“All sexually active people with compatible symptoms should be tested, regardless of sexual orientation, vaccination status or travel history,” the department said.
“Remain aware of the possibility of mpox infection amongst other groups.”
The mpox vaccine is free for those eligible and is available through more than 250 providers across Victoria.
Doctors can also advise if you need booster shots to catch up on vaccines that have been missed.
