Suu Kyi being denied medical care in prison, son says

The son of Myanmar’s detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi says she is being refused urgent medical care despite her ill health.

The 78-year-old has been detained since February 2021 when she was ousted in a military coup and charged with a number of offences including election fraud and corruption which many see as trumped up.

In July she was moved to house arrest in the capital Naypidaw although it’s now understood she has since been returned to prison.

Her son Kim Aris told the ABC he had grave fears for his mother’s health.

“As far as I’m aware, she is unable to eat due to gum disease and potential problems with her wisdom teeth,” he said.

“Given her age, this together with vomiting and dizziness gives reason for serious concerns about her overall ill health and her treatment.

“My mother’s condition requires urgent medical attention.

“A request for urgent medical attention has been put in by the prison authorities themselves, I believe that that has been denied further up the chain.”

Myanmar’s exiled National Unity Government has urged the international community to pressure the junta into providing appropriate medical treatment.

Western governments including Australia have previously condemned the coup and demanded Ms Suu Kyi’s immediate release along with other officials, although they have also been criticised for not doing enough.

A spokesperson for the junta told local reporters the detained leader was fine and receiving treatment.
