New report finds suicide rates in ADF members similar to previous years

A new report from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare has found suicide rates in current and former ADF members remain similar to previous years.

AIHW Defence and Veteran Insights Unit Director Paul Pham says currently serving permanent and reserve males have around half the rate of suicide compared to the rest of the Australian male population, but ex-serving males have a rate of suicide about 26 per cent higher.

“What our latest report does show that there’s 1,677 deaths by suicide of ADF members who had served one day of service since 1 January 1985,” Mr Pham told Sky News Australia.

“Over the period of 1997 to 2021, rates and general patterns remained similar to previous reporting.

“We do, in our report, try and explore trends over time to just explore whether over that 20-year period whether rates are changing or shifting.”
