New Year’s Eve weather guide: Capital city state-by-state forecast

As Australia prepares to bid farewell to 2023, meteorologists have offered hope the rain and storms currently battering the country’s east are set to ease by New Year’s Eve.

“It’s been fairly wet over the last few days, we will see conditions ease across eastern Australia from today but then we do see things pick up over the weekend,” said senior meteorologist for the Bureau of Meteorology, Johnathan How.

“We’re reminding people that are out about to keep up to date with the warnings, check the radar and stay safe this holiday season.”

Here is what the bureau is predicting the weather will be in each capital city on December 31.

Sydneysiders can expect a cloudy and wet New Year’s Eve with the Bureau of Meteorology warning of a high chance of showers.

Southeasterly wind gusts between 15 to 20km/h will also hit the city, turning easterly during the day.

The mercury in Sydney is set to reach a maximum of 25 degrees with a minimum of 19.

“Those wanting to set up early along the harbour to view the fireworks should bring some wet weather gear as you could see some showers and storms throughout the afternoon,” How said.

“Thankfully for Sydney and the Illawarra and Newcastle, it looks like showers will ease through the night. It will be a bit cloudy for the fireworks at midnight but thankfully at this stage drying out by the night.”

Brisbane, Queensland-Rain and thunderstorms are set to kick off New Year’s Eve across the state with moderate wind gusts of 15 to 20 km/h during the day.

Brisbane is expected to see similar conditions to Sydney with partygoers encouraged to keep updated with the latest forecast before heading out. 

Temperatures are expected to reach 35 degrees with a minimum of 23.

“It’s looking like showers and storms across the south-east, from the Gold Coast all the way up to the Tropics, which will ease off at night, but Brisbane is having a chance of showers lingering around through midnight, so bring a jacket,” How said.

Melburnians can expect a partly cloudy New Year’s Eve with a 5 per cent chance of rain.

Celebrations could be hampered by wind gusts of up to 30 km/h.

Temperatures in Melbourne are set to hit a maximum of 21 degrees and a minimum of 13.

“Victoria is looking to be cool and cloudy,” How said.

“We’re not expecting any rainfall across the state, as for Melbourne it’s looking quite cool and there may be some rain around.”

New Year’s Eve in Canberra is set to be a cloudy one.

The capital faces a slight chance of showers and easterly winds of up to 25km/h.

Canberra is expected to reach 23 degrees and a chilly minimum of 12.

Mostly sunny conditions are slated for Adelaide on Sunday.

New Year’s Eve could also see moderate wind gusts between 20 to 30 km/h.

The temperature in Adelaide is set to reach a maximum of 26 and a minimum of 13. 

“Adelaide is fairly cool, we’re not expecting any rainfall at this stage, it’s a little bit milder in Adelaide which is great,” How said.

Hot and sunny conditions are in store for Perth on New Year’s Eve.

There are easterly wind gusts between 15 to 20 km/h expected before shifting west to southwesterly 20 to 30 km/h gusts by morning.

New Year’s Eve in Perth will reach a maximum of 31 degrees and a minimum of 19.

Hobart, Tasmania -A partly cloudy New Year’s Eve will see a 5 per cent chance of rain.

Northwesterly winds of 15 to 20 km/h are likely to shift southeasterly later in the day.

New Year’s Eve in Tasmania will reach a maximum of 23 degrees and a minimum of 9.

Darwin, Northern Territory- The Top End will see a high chance of a shower or two, as well as possible storms on Sunday.

Rain is likely later in the day along with light winds and the chance of a thunderstorm.

The mercury will tip 35 degrees on New Year’s Eve, with a minimum of 26.
