New Zealand Records Over 51,000 Foreign Workers in Q1 of 2024

  • More than 51,000 foreigners entered New Zealand on work visas during the first three months of 2024.
  • New Zealand has recently introduced stricter work visa rules following “unsustainable migration”.
  • In general, more than one million people arrived in New Zealand during the first quarter of 2024.

51,338 foreigners entered New Zealand on work visas during the first quarter of 2024, as revealed by the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment.

The highest number of foreign workers was recorded in January (20,200), followed by February (16,018) and March (15,120), VisaGuide.World reports.

The decrease over the past three months coincided with New Zealand’s introduction of stricter visa regulations in response to concerns about unsustainable migration.

More specifically, on April 7, 2024, the government introduced several changes aiming to tighten the requirements regarding Accredited Employer Work visa (AEWV).

Commenting on the updates, New Zealand’s Migration Minister Erica Stanford further explained that the government aims to draw and keep highly skilled migrants, like secondary teachers, who are in a shortage of skills.
